When Kingdoms Collide

In Matthew chapter 14, we witness a sobering shift from Jesus' growing ministry to a moment of profound mourning. The death of John the Baptist serves as a stark reminder of what happens when earthly kingdoms reject the kingdom of heaven, and when leaders choose lust over love.

Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

John the Baptist was beheaded in prison for speaking truth to power. This wasn't because John was wrong - it was because he was right. When Herod took his brother's wife, John boldly declared, "It is not lawful for you to have her." Instead of repenting, Herod imprisoned the voice of truth.

This raises a difficult question many believers face: Why do faithful servants of God suffer while the wicked seem to prosper? John's story reminds us that following Jesus doesn't make life easier - it often makes it harder. The closer we get to Christ, the more the world pushes back against us.

What Happens When We're Ruled by Lust Instead of Love?

Herod: A King Without Control

Herod was powerful and titled, but pathetic in his control. Though he wore a crown, he was ruled by lust. "'For Herod had arrested John because John had been telling him, It is not lawful for you to have her'" - Matthew 14:3-4 King James Version (KJV).

When lust leads, death follows. At a birthday celebration, Herod made a reckless vow to give his stepdaughter whatever she asked after watching her dance. A moment of pleasure led to a lifetime of regret when she demanded John's head on a platter.

The Progression of Sin

Herod's downfall followed a predictable pattern:

  • Lust made him weak

  • Fear made him compliant

  • Pride made him follow through with something he knew was wrong

He killed the prophet because he wasn't willing to kill his own sin. What you refuse to take control of today will control you tomorrow.

How Do Lust and Love Differ?

Lust and love aren't distant cousins - they're complete opposites:

Lust is:

  • Self-centered

  • Never satisfied

  • Reduces people to objects

  • Demands instant gratification

Love is:

  • Other-centered

  • Enduring and trustworthy

  • Sees people as sons and daughters of the Most High

  • Patient, kind, and sacrificial

John loved God enough and even Herod enough to speak the truth. Real love doesn't stay silent when sin is killing somebody.

What Does It Mean to Repent?

Repentance is one of the greatest gifts of God - the ability to not be dead in your transgressions. It's the ability to say "I'm sorry" and then pivot into a different direction with your actions, knowing that you've been washed by the blood of Jesus.

It's easier to rationalize than it is to repent. It's easier to analyze than it is to surrender. It's easier to explain than to be transformed. But the Bible says we are to be transformed by the renewing of our mind - something we cannot do on our own.

Why Does Following Jesus Sometimes Get Harder?

John finished his race faithfully, uncompromisingly, and obediently to the end - just like the One he came to prepare the way for. The hardest time of John's ministry was at the end when he was beheaded. Similarly, Jesus' hardest moment wasn't His birth in a stone trough, but His death on the cross.

Growing deeper in faith means more testing, more refining, and more opportunities to choose the easy path of walking away. But nothing of value comes easy, and nothing in this world compares to the treasures of the Kingdom of Heaven.

What's the Good News?

Jesus says, "Take heart, I have overcome the world." Because He overcame, He sent His Holy Spirit to dwell in each of us. The Spirit didn't come just for comfort - it came to empower us to overcome.

"'For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life'" - John 3:16 King James Version (KJV).

When Jesus walked out of that tomb, He gave us the greatest gift possible: confirmation that death had been arrested, hell had been conquered, and who we were born as doesn't have to be who we die as.

Life Application

This week, examine your life for areas where lust (not just sexual, but any self-centered desire) might be ruling instead of love. Are there secret sins you've been managing rather than surrendering? Remember that where lust lives, Jesus won't dwell.

Choose to pursue the Kingdom of God and His righteousness with the same passion you pursue earthly pleasures. Die to yourself daily so there's room for Christ to live in you. The kingdom of heaven leads to life, while earthly kingdoms lead to destruction.

Questions for reflection:

  • What areas of my life am I trying to control through my own strength rather than surrendering to God?

  • Am I more concerned with being popular or being faithful to God's truth?

  • What "secret sins" do I need to bring into the light and surrender to Jesus?

  • How can I pursue God's kingdom with the same enthusiasm I show for earthly pleasures?
